(Zimbabwe, 1959) is an award-winning writer of novels, plays and short stories as well as a successful filmmaker. She began writing stories and plays in the early eighties, followed by her debut novel Nervous Conditions (1988). After studying medicine and psychology in England and Zimbabwe, she switched careers after moving to Germany in 1989 to study at the Berlin film academy. In the following years she produced, wrote and directed films and documentaries that were screened to acclaim in Zimbabwe and at international film festivals. Her novel The Book of Not was published in 2006 and in 2018 This Mournable Body, which was shortlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize. Dangarembga's novels form a poignant trilogy about the protagonist, Tambuzai, as well drawing as a raw and candid portrait of Zimbabwean society.
