Syahrial (Sumatra, 1967) began making music at an eary age. At the same time he learned to make tradiotional Sumatran wind instruments, such as the saluang, bansi sarunai and rebab pesisir. Since 1998 Syahrial works as a composer for one of Indonesia's best dance companies, Gumarang Sakti. Alongside this, he works as a freelance composer and designer of new wind instruments that enrich his music. He performs with a group of five Sumatran musicians.

    Before Winternachten starts with its major programme, the journalist and literary critic Michaël Zeeman gives his view on the theme of this year's festival: future and ideals. After this, writer Nelleke Noordervliet presents a varied programme with writers, poets and music. Foreign authors present themselves with a short reading, as a preview on their performance in the coming weekend. With writers from Suriname, Saint Martin, South-Africa, Zimbabwe, Australia, Austria, the USA and Indonesia, and music by the Sumatran group Syahrial & Grup and jazz singer Denise Jannah.

    Syahrial & Grup: music from Sumatra

    Five Sumatran musicians with a fascinating combination of traditional and contemporary music. The leader of the group, Syahrial, works since 1981 as a composer for one of the best modern dance companies of Indonesia, Gumarang Sakti. He performs his own compositions with this group. Syahrial & Grup have performed earlier during the foreign tour of Winternachten in Indonesia, in cooperation with Teater Utan Kayu. Invited by Winternachten, they will make a short tour of the Netherlands. On saturday evening they can be seen in Rasa in Utrecht, on sunday afternoon in De Evenaar in Rotterdam.
