Music, poetry and spoken word merge in a one-off concert with performances by Wende, Ellen ten Damme, Fresku and poets such as Ramsey Nasr and Antjie Krog.

Celebrating 75 years of freedom, these top artists sing about, question, woo or test what 'free' means to them in a sparkling matinee full of music, poems and surprise performances at the Zuiderstrandtheater in The Hague on Sunday afternoon 19 January. Tickets are available at www.zuiderstrandtheater.nl.

Singer/songwriter, theatre maker, chansonnière, actress, performer, producer, artist in residence at Royal Theatre Carré; Wende is all and everything. After the successful tour of her performance MENS and her own Kaleidoscope festival, she is working on a performance in London in collaboration with the Royal Court Theatre and she plays the role of Connie Palmen in the upcoming film adaptation of Palmen's novel IM. During this New Year's concert she will not only play songs from her existing repertoire, but also from new collaborations with Marieke Lucas Rijneveld and others.

Sensitive, bold, funny and boundless: Ellen ten Damme feels at home on both pop festival and theatre stages. The energetic entertainer, singer, musician and actress is on tour with her titillating show Casablanca. Luckily she takes time for a compelling performance during the Winternachten Nieuwjaarsconcert! Accompanied by piano, she gives her extraordinary voice, energy and colour to a performance of carefully chosen chansons with a literary touch.

Rapper, comedian and actor Fresku is a multi-talent to be proud of. After his album debut 'Fresku' he was named best hip-hop artist in the Netherlands. He then released the successful albums 'Maskerade' and 'Never again'. Currently he is touring with his stage show 'Before it's too late'. His characteristics: humour, sincerity and storytelling. That's why he's in the right place in this concert.

The performances of Wende, Ellen ten Damme and Fresku are interspersed with surprise acts and with poetry readings by, among others, actor and poet Ramsey Nasr and South African poet Antjie Krog. These readings will be accompanied by projections of the poems' English translations.

The Winternachten New Year's Concert is an initiative of Writers Unlimited in collaboration with the Zuiderstrandtheater. The concert concludes the 25th Winternachten International Literature Festival in The Hague. From 15 to 19 January 2020, more than 100 writers, poets and artists from the Netherlands and abroad will perform in theatres, libraries and schools throughout The Hague.
