Ukrainian writers in Winternachten Festival

Stanislav Aseyev, who reports on his imprisonment in Donetsk in his book The Torture Camp on Paradise Street, and Tanja Maljartschuk, known for her novel Blue Whale of Memory, situated in Kyiv, will enter into conversation Sunday evening 12 March 2023 during the Winternachten International Literature Festival The Hague during Literary Focus: Ukraine, a programme on the importance of writing and books in wartime.

Prominent authors Sasha Marianna Salzmann (Germany) and Aleksandr Skorobogatov (Belgium) also address this theme, from their perspective of writers who have lived in Western Europe for a long time but grew up in the Soviet era. Accordionist Oleg Lysenko contributes musically, journalists Franka Hummels and Simone Peek lead the discussions. In the supporting programme, journalists Geert Jan Hahn and Floris Akkerman, together the creators of the podcast BNR Perestrojkast, discuss their impressions on the meaning of reporting, writing and books in war situations.
