Ellen Walraven New Director of Writers Unlimited
The board of Writers Unlimited has chosen Ellen Walraven as the new (Artistic) Director of Writers Unlimited. She succeeds Ton van de Langkruis, who departed after 25 years on 1 April 2020.
Ellen Walraven (53) studied theatre in Utrecht. She was involved in the artistic direction and management of various cultural institutions where literature played an important role. She worked as a playwright, producer and director in Utrecht, Amsterdam and Rotterdam at theatres, theatre companies and a cultural-political centre.
Farah Karimi, Chair of the Writers Unlimited Foundation board, said, "In Ellen, the board and staff of Writers Unlimited have found a highly qualified director who is very strong in both content and management. She is trained and experienced in melding literature, drama and debate. We are confident that, in this era of great change, Ellen will lead Writers Unlimited and Winternachten International Literature Festival The Hague to new heights."
Ellen Walraven said, "As the new Director of Writers Unlimited, I am looking forward to familiarizing myself with the history and immaterial capital of the organization; to creating a new dynamic and to challenging the artistic team of program coordinator and editors; to connecting the organization with my (inter)national network; and to creating a self-assured Writers Unlimited festival supported by (inter)national writers that connects literature, in all its manifestations, to new audiences in The Hague and The Netherlands."
Ellen Walraven has held posts including General and Artistic Director of the Rotterdam Schouwburg, Artistic Director of Theater Rotterdam, playwright and producer with Toneelgroep Amsterdam, General and Artistic Director of De Balie in Amsterdam, and member and co-founder of the theatre company 't Barre Land.
