In the 1998 Winternachten edition it was for the first time that South-African, Surinamese, and Antillian artists were invited. In that way the festival developed from and Indoensian/Dutch-East-Indies literary event to a festival for artists and the historically related countries. Historically in the sense of shared colonial backgrounds. This edtion was also the first to be a a three day event.
