Chantal Mouffe
(Charleroi, 1943) heeft zich als politicologe gespecialiseerd in de politieke theorie. In haar werk bekritiseert Mouffe de huidige westerse consensusdemocratie. Haar boek Over het politieke (2008) laat zien hoe gevaarlijk het is om alle politieke verschillen onder het tapijt te vegen. Uiteindelijk zal iedereen die zich niet thuis voelt in het nieuwe 'posttraditionele tijdperk' zijn stem verheffen en dat zal leiden tot extremistische uitwassen, zo betoogt ze. Als voorbeelden neemt ze de opkomst van Haider in Oostenrijk en het succes van Fortuyn in paars Nederland, maar ook de oorlog in Irak. In de jaren zestig was Mouffe actief in de studenten- en feministische beweging. In 1985 publiceerde ze samen met Ernesto Laclau Hegemony and Socialist Strategy, een invloedrijk boek waarin ze een lans breekt voor radicale pluralistische democratie. Mouffe is professor aan de Universiteit van Westminster en doceerde ook aan andere Europese universiteiten, in de VS en Latijns-Amerika.

Five Do's and Don'ts for Barack Obama
Met: Ashwani Saith, Chantal Mouffe, Gündüz Vassaf, Michaël Zeeman, Naema Tahir, Nelleke Noordervliet
Vijf schrijvers en denkers uit vier delen van de wereld kwamen tijdens Winternachten bijeen om hun do's and don'ts aan Barack Obama te formuleren. Nadat de vijf genodigden hun adviesvoorstellen hadden geformuleerd gaven studenten van het Institute of Social Studies hun commentaar.
Gesprekleider Michaël Zeeman werd verrast door de cynische en zelfs activistische reactie van de studenten. Waar de schrijvers en denkers snakken naar verandering die de nieuwe president kan brengen, bleken de studenten hier uiterst sceptisch over.Deelnemers aan het debat waren de schrijvers Nelleke Noordervliet en Naema Tahir, de Brits-Belgische politiek-filosofe Chantal Mouffe, de Turkse schrijver en psycholoog Gündüz Vassaf en ontwikkelingseconoom Ashwani Saith uit India. Zij formuleerden elk één advies aan Obama. Studenten van het Institute of Social Studies, afkomstig uit zuidelijke landen, reageerden op deze aanbevelingen. Waar de studenten in eerste instantie geen eenduidig advies wilden formuleren, kwamen de genodigden en studenten uiteindelijk toch met een reeks aanbevelingen. Onderstaande aanbevelingen zijn verzonden naar het Witte Huis.

Chantal Mouffe:
Acknowledge that the world is multi-polar and that the US cannot behave any more as the sole legitimate centre of power. Diversity exists. Diversity and identity underpin everything.
Gündüz Vassaf:
Think also as a world citizen.
Be bold, focus on right not re-election. Make peace, not war.
